Has Tottenham progressed this season?

Tottenham will finish in the top-four of the Premier League for a third straight season after a narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle on Wednesday night. All Spurs have to do to ensure a spot in the Champions League group stage is to beat Leicester at home in the final game of the season.

Have Spurs really progressed?

Spurs are often praised for their style of play. The north London side does play a good brand of football. They have no doubt progressed in the last four years under boss Mauricio Pochettino.

However, some would say what do Spurs have to show for their efforts this season. They are now a decade without a trophy. The north London club has also not progressed from last season, despite what club insiders say.

Last season Spurs accrued 86 points and finished …

Spurs seal deal for Lo Celso

Tottenham have reached an agreement for the loan signing of Giovani Lo Celso, with the club retaining an option to make his move from Real Betis permanent.

Lo Celso becomes Spurs third acquisition of the window, following the signings of Tanguy Ndombele – who completed a £55million move in July – and Jack Clarke, who was immediately loaned back to Leeds United.

Fulham s versatile left-sided teenager Ryan Sessegnon is also thought to have completed his move to White Hart Lane for a reported £30m fee, although that transfer had yet to be officially confirmed.

We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement for the season-long loan signing of Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis with an option to make the transfer permanent, Spurs said in a statement.…

Tuchel issues challenge to Hudson-Odoi – but is the Chelsea boss right to want more?

Thomas Tuchel has challenged Callum Hudson-Odoi to have the same impact from the bench as he does when starting games for Chelsea, though insists there is no issue between the pair.

Hudson-Odoi came on as a substitute at the start of the second half as the Blues trailed 1-0 at Southampton on Saturday, only to then be taken off himself as he made way for Hakim Ziyech in the 76th minute.

Mason Mount s penalty pulled the Blues level at St Mary s Stadium, but the decision taken by Tuchel to replace the replacement was the major talking point from a game that finished 1-1.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund coach explained the England international was not sharp enough during his time on the pitch, but was his criticism fair? Even…

´Too many mistakes´ – Pioli demands better as Milan suffer another defeat

Milan head coach Stefano Pioli admits he is seeing diminishing returns from his team after they crumbled to a 3-1 defeat against Sassuolo at San Siro.

A dismal day for the Rossoneri was bookended by moments of mixed fortune for Alessio Romagnoli, who scored the opening goal to put Milan ahead before being sent off late in the game, by which time Sassuolo had their winning lead.

Gianluca Scamacca and Domenico Berardi scored with excellent strikes for Sassuolo, either side of a Simon Kjaer own goal, as Milan struggled to keep pace with lively visitors.

Pioli s team finished second last season, after being overtaken by an Inter side who were relentless after chasing their city rivals off top spot. Milan went unbeaten for their first 15 games of the 2020-21 Serie A…

Real ready to pay €100m for Bale

Marca journalist Miguel Serrano believes Real Madrid will part with a world record fee to secure Tottenham attacker Gareth Bale.

The Spanish giants spent €96million in enticing former Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in June 2009 and Serrano thinks Real s president Florentino Perez could break the €100m-mark to purchase Bale from Tottenham.

Marca is widely regarded as the voice of Real with the Madrid-based newspaper regularly writing articles in support of the capital club.

I believe that Florentino Perez is prepared to pay what it takes but there are some figures that are unattainable, Serrano said on Monday.

He is not going to double that amount (paid for Ronaldo) or even go as far as €150m but €100m Florentino would…

Davide Frattesi’s double earns Italy a crucial win against Ukraine

Davide Frattesi scored twice as Italy claimed a crucial 2-1 win over Ukraine to keep their hopes of reaching next year’s European Championship finals alive.

The defending champions headed into the game trailing their second-placed rivals by five points in Group C following Saturday’s draw with North Macedonia.

But Frattesi’s double in the first 30 minutes gave the Italians valuable breathing space, despite Andriy Yarmolenko reducing the deficit before the break.

Belgium and Austria cemented their status as joint leaders of Group F with convincing wins over Estonia and Sweden respectively.

Ameobi future is ´unclear´

Long-serving Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi is in the dark as to whether he will remain at the club beyond the end of the season.

The 32-year-old Nigeria international has spent his entire career at St James Park aside from a loan spell at Stoke City back in 2008, but his contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

Ameobi, who made his Newcastle debut against Chelsea in 2000, knows there is a chance his long stay at the club could be coming to an end, but has vowed to give his all for Alan Pardew s side.

He told The Shields Gazette: After the summer, my future is unclear.

Basically, I ll do what I ve always done. Like I ve always said, I ve never taken it (playing for Newcastle) for granted. Every time I step on that pitch, I relish it.
